More Retired Players Sue NFL about Concussions And Head Injuries

An AP article reported in the Boston Globe today tells of 12 additional retired players who have sued the NFL in Federal Court in New Jersey about its failure to adequately warn players about the known risks of concussions and widespread use of Toradol, a painkiller, which could adversely affect players with head injuries or concussions. This law suit joins a growing number of cases filed against the NFL during the past year alleging that the league has purposefully concealed the known dangers of repeated concussions and did not take adequate steps to protect players. Several months ago 75 players sued the NFL and Riddell Inc., the official NFL helmet brand since 1989, alleging that the defendants failed to warn the players about the long term and serious brain injuries associated with football related concussions. The players allege the league has known for decades that repeated jarring blows to the head can lead to brain injuries including dementia, cognitive impairments, depression and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Over the past several years there has been increased research concerning the long term effects of repeated concussions on NFL players.  Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy or C.T.E. is a condition thought to be caused by repeated concussions and resulting in cognitive impairment, symptoms similar to early onset Alzheimer’s disease and even cases of suicide. Suicides of former Philadelphia Eagles safety Andre Waters, and Chicago Bears safety Dave Duerson are suspected of being related to CTE.  In Waters case the analysis of his 44 year old brain tissue resembled that of an 85 year old man with Alzheimer’s. Boston University School of Medicine Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy found CTE in the brains of 14 of 15 former NFL players.
